Living a Healthy Life
Your body is a machine. Like a car or any other machine, you have to take care of it.
When you take good care of your car, it drives better, goes faster, and lasts longer.
Same with you – the better you take care of yourself, the better you feel.
There are different ways to take care of your health. What do you think of when you hear the word “healthy”?
The word “healthy” might make you think of a lot of things, like:
- Eating right
- Exercising
- Talking through problems
- Seeing your doctor
- Avoiding things that are bad for you
Being healthy is simple. It’s about making good choices.
Let’s look at three parts to living a healthy life.
- Physical Health is caring about your body.
- Mental Health is caring for your thoughts.
- Spiritual Health is caring for your beliefs.
Being healthy comes from making good choices everyday.
Food gives your body nutrients. Nutrients are like gas for your car. Eating the right food helps your body run!
If you do not feed your body good foods, it won’t work right. You’ll get sick more often.
Eating well means eating food from each food group and drinking plenty of water.
The food groups are:
- Grains
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Protein
- Dairy
Three ways to eat right:
- Variety
- Balance
- Portion
Variety is the spice of life! Eating many different foods is good for you.
TIP: the more colors and textures, the better your meal is for you!
Balance your plate – but not on your head! Balancing meals means eating foods from all the good groups.
TIP: Split your food into three sections. One food shouldn’t take up more than one section.
Don’t supersize! Eating too much isn’t good for you. At meals, eat a little of everything.
TIP: Put the right size serving on your plate.

Exercise is another part of being Healthy physically. Exercise has a lot of benefits.
It’s smart to exercise your body every day! Try exercising with someone fun.
Be sure you exercise at least 3 times every week.
Another big part of being healthy physically is resting. Rest helps your body heal and recover from the day.
Everyone needs different amounts of sleep. Be sure to get enough sleep so you feel rested every morning.
The last part of being healthy physically is having regular check-ups with your doctor.
Mental Health is caring for your thoughts, your feelings, and your relationships with other people.
What does good mental health look like?
Here are a few ways to take care of your Mental Health:
- Talk about your feelings
- Visit people
- Volunteer to help others
Spiritual Health is the last part of living a healthy life.
Spiritual Health is about living a meaningful life and being part of something bigger than just you.
Spiritual Health is very personal and individual.
Being spiritually healthy looks different for everyone.
The 3 parts of being healthy are all important. Being healthy in one way helps make you healthy in other ways, too. For example, being healthy physically improves your mental health!
